The Section of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry aims to promote the development, mental and physical health of children and their families. A wide range of research is being undertaken within the Section. There is a strong focus on the development of interventions to enhance children’s development and well-being.

The Section comprises four sub-groups with strong overlaps:
The research includes large observational studies, treatment studies as well as those involving neuroimaging and genetics. There is a particular interest in the development of children growing up in the face of adversity and these include children with psychological disorders, developmental problems, physical illness (including infections, especially HIV/AIDS) in the family or the child.

We carry out our work both in the UK and overseas and have an extensive network of international collaborators. We have a strong interest in relation to children in the developing world especially HIV/AIDS, poverty and general disadvantage. Refugees are another focus of our clinical research. We are committed to the training of medical students, young doctors, other medical scientists, social scientists and health care professionals.

We have a strong group of graduate students who are an integral part of the Section.
